What is Octothorp(#)

Did you know that the hashtag symbol '#' is also known as an Octothorp?

It's the combination of Octo, meaning eight, and thorp meaning village. It was first coined in the early 1960s by  Don Macpherson, who thought that his company needed a more scientific term for the symbol.
